Vietnam: More than 1,000 workers strike because of salary dissatisfaction

About 1,000 workers of BYD Vietnam Electronics Company, Ltd., Phú Thọ province, went on strike on September 15 because of dissatisfaction with low wages and because the company does not adequately address their requests for other labor benefits.

According to a quick report of the Labor Confederation of Phú Thọ province, the strike starts from the evening of May 14 with about 400 workers after they received their August salary. These workers have stopped working since then and just sat and waited until 5 p.m. on September 15 to take attendance and then left, according to online news Dân Trí.

By the morning of September 15, there were about 1,000 day-shift workers gathered in the company’s yard. Tuổi Trẻ newspaper quoted a worker as saying that BYD Company established the night shift from August, but when we received our wage by the middle of September, the workers were angry when they did not see that the allowance for the night work and went on strike. This worker also added that their base salary is also lower than many companies in the industrial park, and also do not provide meals in the current conditions of increased price of goods.

The Federation said that it has directed the Trade Union in industrial zones of Phú Thọ province to coordinate with the authorities to work with businesses and consider workers’ recommendations. After in contact with the workers, the trade union of the Industrial Parks acknowledged their 12 recommendations, including suggestions to provide meal allowance, night shift allowance, breaks between shifts, salary review…

In the afternoon of September 15, the representative of BYD Electronics Vietnam Company, Ltd. met with worker representatives and responded to their comments. Therefore, the company explained that their basic salary pays are higher than the standard law requirement, and promised to look into the issue of meals for workers.

After the meeting and announcement of the company, 70% of workers have returned to work as normal, 30% of workers who disagree with the company’s decision continue to remain in the company’s yard.

In the morning of September 16, more than 500 workers continued to stop working.

BYD Electronics Vietnam Company Ltd. is an electronic component manufacturing enterprise of 100% Chinese capital, with 2,500 workers.
